Puebla vs Monterrey

Puebla host Monterrey at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc on Wednesday 21 October, with kick-off at 19:00 local time in Mexico City, in Matchday 13 of the Apertura 2026.

La Franja sit 12th on 16 points from 12 games, while Rayados are eighth on 17 points from 11.

Match preview

Puebla have won four, drawn four and lost four of their 12 games, with a goal difference of -1. At home they have one win, three draws and one defeat from five matches, scoring six and conceding six.

Recent form is a concern. La Franja have not won in their last five league games, losing 1-0 to Toluca and 1-0 to Tigres, and drawing 1-1 with Atlante, 1-1 with Leon and 0-0 at Tijuana on Saturday. They have scored just twice in that run.

Their last three home matches produced one defeat and two draws. Away from home the record is better, with three wins, one draw and three defeats from seven trips.

Monterrey are eighth on 17 points from 11 games, with a goal difference of +3. At home they have won four, drawn one and lost one, scoring 13 goals.

The picture changes on the road. Rayados have won one of five away games, drawn one and lost three, scoring six and conceding nine.

They arrive in good spirits after a 2-1 win over Pachuca on Monday. Before that they drew 1-1 with America and lost 4-2 to Atlante on 26 September. Their previous league victory was a 1-0 success against Cruz Azul.

Lucas Ocampos leads the scoring charts with five goals, followed by Diego Rossi on four. Together they account for nine of the team's 19 goals this season.

The recent head-to-head is one-sided. Monterrey have won four of the last five league meetings, with the other a 1-1 draw in January 2025. Puebla have scored five goals in that spell and conceded 11. The latest meeting finished 2-1 to Rayados on 22 April.

There is added tension in the context. One point separates the sides in the table, and the winner moves closer to the Liguilla places. Puebla travel to Atlas on Sunday, while Monterrey have just two days of rest after facing Pachuca.

Team news

Puebla will be without Sergio Sanabria, who suffered a muscle tear before the game against Leon. Reports mention up to two absentees, but only Sanabria's name appears in the sources consulted.

Gerardo Espinoza is expected to set up in a 4-2-3-1, with Ricardo Gutierrez in goal, Alejandro Organista and Alonso Ramirez in midfield and Luifer Hernandez leading the line.

Monterrey have no suspensions, and Matias Almeyda could have a full squad available, according to Sports Illustrated. Esteban Andrada has started the last five league matches.

Up front, Hugo Cuypers has three goals in 10 league games this term and Orbelin Pineda one goal and two assists in nine. Corona, Ocampos and Rossi are expected to support Cuypers.

We say
Puebla1 - 2Monterrey

Puebla have gone five games without a win and scored only twice in that time. Monterrey dominate the recent head-to-head, with four wins and a draw, and have the stronger squad. Their away form is patchy, though, and Puebla rarely lose heavily at home. We expect a tight contest that Rayados edge by a single goal.
