Eight titles in one year? Argentina overhauls its league and opens more paths to a trophy
The 2027 season will feature 30 teams, two tournaments with knockout rounds and a champion decided on points. The new Recopa completes a list of eight domestic trophies.

Argentine football will put eight domestic titles up for grabs starting in 2027. The figure combines league championships, cups and playoffs between their winners, within a calendar that will also change how the league is played.
The Liga Profesional confirmed on Thursday, October 29, that the two groups will be scrapped. All 30 clubs will face each other over the course of the year, although the Apertura and Clausura will remain, each with its own champion.
How the league will work
The key is in the numbers: each team will play the other 29 and face its derby or paired rival a second time. That makes 30 regular-season matchdays in total, split into two blocks of 15.
After each block, the top 16 teams of that half-season will enter a knockout bracket starting from the round of 16. The Clausura will reset the points to zero for that competition, while the annual table will keep the totals from both tournaments.
That means three titles tied to the league: the Apertura, the Clausura and the League Champion, the last of which goes to the team with the most points across the 30 regular matchdays.
The eight trophies
| Trophy | How it is decided |
|---|---|
| Torneo Apertura | Won by the winner of the first half-season knockout rounds. |
| Torneo Clausura | Decided by the second half-season knockout rounds. |
| League Champion | Goes to the leader of the annual table. |
| Copa Argentina | Brings together First Division and lower-league teams. |
| Trofeo de Campeones | Pits the Apertura and Clausura champions against each other. |
| Supercopa Argentina | Matches the Trofeo de Campeones winner against the Copa Argentina winner. |
| Supercopa Internacional | Pits the Trofeo de Campeones winner against the League Champion. |
| Recopa de Campeones | Three-team round-robin between the winners of the Copa Argentina, Supercopa Argentina and Supercopa Internacional. |
The Recopa is the addition that brings the count to eight. Its rules allow runners-up to step in when qualified clubs repeat.
It also matters to separate the year a cup is played from where each spot comes from: some cups are contested by winners of previous editions. Nor do eight trophies mean eight different champion clubs.
A team will be able to win the league on consistency without lifting the Apertura or the Clausura.
The quirk of the system is that a team will be able to win the league on consistency without lifting the Apertura or the Clausura. And winning one cup can open the door to competing for another.
