Juan Brunetta could become a new option for the Mexico national team. The Tigres Argentine has reportedly already spoken with Rafael Márquez about the possibility of wearing the El Tri jersey, with the intention of formally starting his naturalization process once the Apertura 2026 ends.

The contact puts the 29-year-old midfielder among the options for the new cycle. However, he would still need to complete his naturalization and obtain sporting clearance to represent Mexico.

Brunetta arrived in Mexican football in 2022 to play for Santos Laguna and has been with Tigres since the Clausura 2024. His time living in the country is key to understanding when he could take the next step.

Citizenship and FIFA: two separate processes

There's an important distinction: obtaining Mexican citizenship and meeting FIFA's requirements are separate processes.

Mexican law sets a minimum residency of two years for applicants from Latin American countries, in addition to the other requirements of the process. That's why the five years mentioned in his case should not be confused with a mandatory wait before applying for naturalization.

On the sporting side, FIFA's residency pathway requires at least five years for players who began living in the country after turning 18. For Brunetta, summer 2027 looms as a possible target date, provided he can prove the required period.

He also played for Argentina at the 2020 U-23 Olympic qualifying tournament. That history means he must request a change of association from FIFA in order to represent Mexico.

Márquez's interest opens a door, but Brunetta's arrival with El Tri is not yet guaranteed. To wear green, he will need Mexican citizenship and a favorable ruling from FIFA.
