Match preview

United arrive in the worst form of their season. They lost 2-0 at Chelsea on Saturday, a game in which Lisandro Martinez was sent off. A week earlier they were beaten 3-0 at home by Bournemouth. They have lost four of their last five matches.

Their only point in that run was a 1-1 draw at Leeds on October 18. They have scored two goals and conceded 12 across those five games. Michael Carrick is under pressure.

Roma sit at the other end of the spectrum. They have won four of their last five and drawn the other, 3-3 at Napoli. They beat Udinese 5-2 on October 31 and Cagliari 4-2 four days earlier.

In Europe, they hammered Slovan Bratislava 4-0, drew 1-1 at Fenerbahce and lost 4-3 at home to Real Madrid. They have four points and a goal difference of +3.

At home, they have scored seven and conceded four in two games. They have played only once away in this phase.

Gian Piero Gasperini's side score freely, but they also leak goals, with seven conceded in their last five matches. Donyell Malen is the expected focal point, with Rodrigo Mora and Matias Soule in support.

The most recent meeting came in the 2021 Europa League semi-finals. United won the first leg 6-2 at Old Trafford and Roma won the return 3-2, but the English side went through.

The context matters. With three points from three games, United need to pick up results at home to avoid complicating their qualification hopes. Roma can move closer to the top places.

Team news

United have significant absentees. Benjamin Sesko and Manuel Ugarte are out injured. Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu remain doubts and English reports do not expect them to return, which limits the options at full-back.

Marcus Rashford, with a hip injury, is a doubt. So is Amad Diallo, who went off with a problem against Chelsea. Kobbie Mainoo returned to the squad in that game.
