Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in Premier League matchweek 8. The game was goalless until the 77th minute, when an own goal from Mike Penders broke the deadlock. A red card for Cole Palmer and a strike from Mathys Tel sealed the result.

It was 0-0 at half-time. The Spurs controlled the ball with 68% possession and had 15 shots to Chelsea's seven. Even so, the threat was modest on both sides: the xG was 0.80 for Tottenham and 0.51 for the hosts, and each team put four shots on target.

The opener came in the 77th minute through Penders' own goal, which was credited to Tottenham. In the 80th minute, Cole Palmer was sent off with a straight red card and Chelsea were down to ten men. Mathys Tel made it 2-0 in the 87th minute. Chris Kavanagh was the referee.

The visitors also won the corner count, six to four. There were 14 fouls apiece, three yellow cards for Tottenham and two for Chelsea, along with Palmer's red.

Our prediction

Our preview pointed to a 2-1 Chelsea win on the back of their better scoring rhythm, while warning that the Spurs had chances through Maddison and Kudus. We got the result wrong: Chelsea failed to score and Tottenham won 2-0.

Before this result was added, Chelsea were fourth on 13 points and Tottenham 17th on six, both having played seven matches.
