Who is Armando León? The Mexican striker in Croatia who surprised on Rafa Márquez's list
Beyond his five goals and two assists for NK Osijek, the 26-year-old striker stands out for his work rate: he covers more than 11 kilometers a game and presses like few forwards in Europe.

The biggest surprise in Rafael Márquez's squad for the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals against Jamaica didn't come from the Liga MX spotlight but from the Balkans. Armando León, a 26-year-old striker from Ensenada who plays for NK Osijek in Croatia, earned his first senior call-up after building his career against the odds, far from Mexico.
From few minutes to scoring machine in Andorra
A Pachuca academy product, he made his top-flight debut with León in March 2020 but managed only nine games and one goal. He then played for Alebrijes de Oaxaca in the Liga de Expansión before moving to Andorra, where he scored 43 goals in 56 games for FC Rànger's and played Conference League qualifiers with FC Santa Coloma, scoring once in four games.
He joined Osijek as a free agent without a big contract: he had to earn his place over roughly three weeks of preseason under the coaches' watch. The club has since extended his deal through the summer of 2028.
A No. 9 who also defends
In his first season in Croatia he has five goals and two assists, including a brace in a 4-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb, the country's giant, on matchday 7. But the number that best explains his call-up is his physical output: he averages more than 11 kilometers per game and ranks among Europe's top ten strikers for high-intensity runs and top-speed sprints.
Far from a static No. 9 despite his 1.89 m frame, León acts as his team's first defender. He combines hold-up play and heading ability with relentless pressure on the opponent's build-up.
His chance against Jamaica
With Raúl Jiménez out injured, the coaching staff found in Croatia a profile built for Jamaica's physical demands: a tall, strong striker with a midfielder's engine. Mexico visit Jamaica on November 14 in Kingston and close the series on the 17th in Monterrey.
