Athletic Club vs Real Sociedad

Prediction and how to watch for Athletic Club vs Real Sociedad: everything you need to know before the game.

Athletic Club host Real Sociedad at San Mamés on Sunday 1 November, with kickoff at 2pm in Mexico City, in LaLiga Matchday 11.

The hosts sit eighth with 12 points from nine games. The visitors are fifth on 19 points from 10 matches.

Match preview

Athletic have had mixed results lately. They drew 0-0 with both Rayo Vallecano and Valencia, lost 3-1 at Levante on 21 October, then bounced back with a 4-0 home win over Getafe.

On Thursday 29 October they thrashed Prat 6-1 away in the Copa del Rey. That is 10 goals in their last two games, although Edin Terzić rotated several starters for the cup tie.

At home, the Basque side have won two, drawn two and lost one of five, scoring nine and conceding four. Away from Bilbao the record dips to one win, one draw and two defeats, with three scored and five conceded.

They trail Real Sociedad by seven points, and the visitors have played one game more. Athletic's goal difference is plus three.

Pellegrino Matarazzo's Real arrive in better form. They have won four straight in LaLiga, the latest a 2-1 success over Levante on 25 October, with goals from Orri Óskarsson and Beñat Turrientes.

Before that came a 5-2 win at Malaga and a 3-2 victory over Deportivo La Coruña. They are also flying in Europe, beating Lillestrom 6-0 in the Europa League on 22 October after a 1-1 draw with Union St. Gilloise.

On the road, Real have won three and lost two of five, scoring 12 and conceding 11. That shows plenty of attacking threat but also some looseness at the back. At home they have won three, drawn one and lost one, with seven scored and seven conceded.

Recent meetings favour the visitors. Real won both Copa del Rey semi-final legs in 2026 by 1-0 (11 February in Bilbao and 4 March at Anoeta), and also won 3-2 in LaLiga on 1 November 2025.

The last league meeting at San Mamés finished 1-1 on 1 February. Athletic won a friendly between the sides 1-0 on 2 October 2026.

The context adds weight. Real want to protect their place in the upper reaches of the table, while Athletic are looking to close the gap.

Team news

Athletic have three confirmed absentees. Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta hurt his hamstring against Getafe, Gorka Guruzeta remains out with a knee injury and Unai Eguíluz is still recovering.

Oihan Sancet is back in training and available, though he is unlikely to start. With Ruiz de Galarreta out, the midfield pivot is the least settled area of the team.

Unai Simón is expected to return in goal after resting in the cup. Hugo Rincón, Dani Vivian, Aymeric Laporte and Yuri look set to form the back four, having arrived fresh.

For Real Sociedad, Luken Beitia and Aleksandr Zakharyan are doubts with ankle problems. None of the sources we checked published a full starting XI for this game.

Our prediction
Athletic Club2 - 1Real Sociedad
39%Athletic Club29%Draw32%Real Sociedad

We think Athletic Club will edge a 2-1 win. San Mamés has been their strongest platform and they arrive on the back of 10 goals in two games. Real are in form and score away from home, but they also concede plenty, and the loss of Ruiz de Galarreta is not enough to tilt this towards the visitors.
