Borussia Dortmund vs Real Betis

Predicted line-ups, prediction and how to watch for Dortmund vs Real Betis: everything you need to know before the game.

Borussia Dortmund host Real Betis at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday 4 November (14:00 Mexico City time) in Matchday 4 of the Champions League league phase.

The hosts are 13th with six points. The Andalusians arrive in fifth with nine and a perfect record.

Match preview

Dortmund have had an uneven Champions League start. They have six points from three games, sit 13th of 36 and have a goal difference of +1. They have won twice and lost once.

At home they have played just once in the league phase and won 3-2. Away from Signal Iduna Park they beat Sabah 2-1 on 20 October and lost 1-0 at Bodø/Glimt.

Serhou Guirassy is the main attacking reference. He has four goals in the competition, out of the five the team have scored. Dortmund have also conceded in all three European games.

Recent form is solid. Niko Kovac's side drew 2-2 at Bayern Munich on 31 October and beat Werder Bremen 3-2 in the DFB Pokal. Before that they won 1-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt and drew 0-0 at Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, where they remain unbeaten after nine rounds.

Real Betis, under Manuel Pellegrini, are the early surprise of the competition. They have won all three Champions League games and sit fifth with nine points and a goal difference of +3.

They beat Porto 3-2 and Feyenoord 1-0 at home, and won 3-2 on their only trip. They have scored seven times but have also conceded four.

Domestically the picture is more mixed. Betis beat Malaga 2-1 on 31 October, drew 0-0 at Celta Vigo and lost 5-2 at home to Barcelona on 17 October.

The six Champions League games played by the two sides have produced 20 goals, an average of 3.3 per match. Both have shown cutting edge in attack and some fragility at the back.

There is no head-to-head history. This will be the first official meeting between the clubs.

The context adds pressure. With 36 teams in the table, Dortmund need to pick up points to stay in the race for a direct qualification place. For Betis, a good result in Germany would be another big step towards the last 16.

Team news

Dortmund are without Emre Can and Konstantelias, who both have knee injuries, and Justin Lerma, who is dealing with a muscle problem. UEFA also lists Kauã Prates as out with a muscular issue.

UEFA's probable XI points to a back three of Gadou, Anton and Schlotterbeck, with Jobe Bellingham as the link man and Fábio Silva alongside Guirassy. Other outlets place Sabitzer or Bensebaïni in the side, so there is some doubt in that area.

Betis will be without Cucho Hernández, who has a calf injury, and Junior Firpo, who is nursing a groin problem. Iker Losada is also unavailable through a coach's decision.

UEFA projects Vallés in goal; Bellerín, Bartra, Natan and Fran García in defence; Fornals and Roca in the base of midfield; and Antony, Isco and Abde Ezzalzouli behind Parrott.

Our prediction

We think Dortmund will win 2-1. Signal Iduna Park and Guirassy's finishing carry weight against a Betis side that have conceded in two of their three European games and are missing Cucho Hernández up front. The visitors have confidence and goals, so we expect them to score, but the hosts have more resources to decide it.
